From The Leas to the shoreline.
Folkestone’s character has been shaped by its cliff-top promenade, working harbour and two very different stretches of beach.
The Leas lifts
The original water-balanced Leas Lift opened in 1885 to link the promenade with the seafront. It proved so popular that a second parallel lift followed in 1890. The surviving lift remains one of Folkestone’s best-loved landmarks.
Harbour and rail
The railway arrived in 1843, helping Folkestone grow as both a seaside resort and a cross-Channel port. Today the Harbour Arm offers a new way to enjoy that maritime setting.
Sand and shingle
Sunny Sands is the sandy beach beside the harbour. Further west, Mermaids Beach sits below the Lower Leas Coastal Park, with pebbles, sea views and room for a coastal walk.
