Ashford has always been a place of connections.
The town’s story runs from medieval markets to the railway that helped shape modern Ashford. You can still see that history around the centre today.
A market town
Ashford was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. Its market town story began in 1243, with trading centred on Middle Row and the High Street.
St Mary’s at its heart
The parish church of St Mary the Virgin has stood in the town centre since the late 13th century. Its medieval tower remains one of Ashford’s most familiar landmarks.
Shaped by the railway
The railway reached Ashford in 1842, followed by the locomotive works in 1847. The railway company also built Newtown for its workers, leaving a lasting mark on the town.
